DEATH RACE 2050

February 19, 2016 near Lima, Peru
After 4 films, Universal is rebooting their DEATH RACE franchise yet again as DEATH RACE 2050 has begun filming in Peru. Helmed by G.J. Echternkamp (FRANK & CINDY, VIRTUALLY HEROES) from a script he co-wrote with Matt Yamashita (SHARKTOPUS VS. PTERACUDA) and stars Manu Bennett (THE HOBBIT, 30 DAYS OF NIGHT), Malcolm McDowell (HALLOWEEN, A CLOCKWORK ORANGE), Burt Grinstead (“NCIS”), Marci Miller (VIPER), Folake Olowofoyeku (THE BEAVER), Anessa Ramsey (SOUTHBOUND, THE SIGNAL), Yancy Butler ("WITCHBLADE", HARD TARGET) and Charlie Farrell (CANTAR). Here's the synopsis: “In the not-too-distant future, America is controlled by an all-powerful corporate government that keeps the masses placated with violent virtual-reality entertainment. The event of the year is the Death Race, where a motley assortment of drivers compete in a cross-country road race, scoring points for running down pedestrians and killing each other. The reigning champion and popular favorite is half-man, half-machine Frankenstein (Bennett)— but little does he know he’s taken on a rebel spy as his co-pilot.” Bennett follows in the footsteps of actors who have portrayed Frankenstein in previous films, including David Carradine (DEATH RACE 2000), Jason Statham (DEATH RACE), Luke Goss (DEATH RACE 2, DEATH RACE: INFERNO) & Dougaray Scott (DEATH RACE: INFERNO). Producer Roger Corman released a statement saying: “This is an amazing opportunity for me and millions of Death Race 2000 fans to experience the intensity, thrills and dark humor of the original, fueled by a terrific young cast, spectacular vehicles and side-splitting action, literally.” I'm a huge fan of Bennett and this series, which is why I'm slightly worried about the writer & director. Hopefully, it won't be as bad as I'm thinking it will be.
Death Race 2000, the 1975 B movie cult classic from exploitation king Roger Corman, is getting a 21st century revamp.
Corman is producing Death Race 2050, which began shooting in Peru earlier this month, with Malcolm McDowell behind the wheel to star alongside Manu Bennett, best known for playing DC villain Slade Wilson in The CW's Arrow.
The new movie updates the concept of automotive gladiators earning points for killing pedestrians and their fellow drivers. Bennett is playing Frankenstein, the mysterious and almost unbeatable racer.
G.J. Echternkamp is directing Death Race 2050 from a script he co-wrote with Matt Yamashita. Corman is producing.
Also cast are Burt Grinstead (NCIS), Marci Miller (Viper), Folake Olowofoyeku (The Beaver), Anessa Ramsey (Footloose), Yancy Butler (Hard Target) and Charlie Farrell (Cantar).
“This is an amazing opportunity for me and millions of Death Race 2000 fans to experience the intensity, thrills and dark humor of the original, fueled by a terrific young cast, spectacular vehicles and side-splitting action, literally,” said Corman in a statement.
Universal 1440 Entertainment, a production entity of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, will release the film.

XLrator Media, Parkside Pictures and Tadross Media Group have announced a multi-picture production slate, which they will co-produce and distribute worldwide.
The first production under the pact will be the action-thriller “If,” with Mario Van Peebles directing from his own script. Van Peebles’ credits include “New Jack City,” “Empire” and the upcoming “USS Indianapolis.”
The story is described as being taken from recent headlines, and fashioned into its own morality tale putting a line down the middle of who is truly “righteous” and who is “criminal” and where the line crosses between the two.
The deal was announced by XLrator Media CEO Barry Gordon, Parkside Pictures founding partners Danny Roth and Damiano Tucci, TMG president Michael Tadross, Jr., and Chris Conover of Hudson Private.
XLrator Media also teamed with New Artists Alliance in August for three sci-fi thrillers, including “Pandemic,” and banded with Benattar/Thomas in February for three action-thrillers, including “Paradox” and “The Last Heist.” Parkside Pictures is financing some of the films in those slates as well.
